Clergy in The Church

By Gerald

In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there is not a paid clergy. Instead, each member may have a calling to serve in some capacity. I am currently called to teach a class for men called the High Priest Group.

This may require some explanations, so hang in here with me. First of all, one must understand that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and under the direction of Heavenly Father, he created or organized everything related to this earth and many other worlds. It was by His power that this was done. When God placed Adam and Eve on the earth, He (Jesus Christ) gave Adam authority to use His (Christ’s) power. This is called Priesthood. A man must be called of God as was Aaron [Moses brother]; i.e. called by revelation from God, ordained by the laying on of hands by one who currently holds that authority, and it must be known by the membership that he is called.

Many men have received this Priesthood, and are mentioned in the scriptures. For example, Seth, Enoch, Noah, Melchizedek, Abraham, Joseph, and Moses. When Jesus Christ was on the earth, he ordained his 12 Apostles and gave them all the priesthood authority and keys necessary to perform the saving ordinances, administer in the affairs of His church, and teach the truths of His plan of happiness and redemption.

In 1829, Peter, James, and John; three of these ancient Apostles as resurrected beings, visited Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, and by the laying on of hands, ordained them to the holy Apostleship. Since that time, worthy men, who have shown by their faith and good works that they are willing to follow the Savior, Jesus Christ, have been ordained by those who have received the Priesthood by an unbroken line of succession, to various offices of the Priesthood. I have been ordain an High Priest in the Melchizedek Priesthood.

Many other men throughout the world have been called to this sacred calling, and are organized in Quorums, and Groups within those Quorums. I teach one of those Groups. In this way The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is unique from any man-made church. It’s priesthood has authority from God to administer all the ordinances necessary for the salvation and exaltation of God’s children. I invite all to come unto Christ and His church. There you can be baptized for the remission of sins, receive the Holy Ghost, and learn all you need to know to become a family forever.
